Schwarzenegger's Bingo Budget Bid

Schwarzenegger to propose borrowing against lottery

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will propose borrowing against future state lottery revenue to help close a budget shortfall estimated as high as $20 billion, administration officials told The Associated Press.

In a revised budget to be released Wednesday, Schwarzenegger will propose raising $15 billion over three years by selling bonds based on anticipated lottery revenue, then use about $5.1 billion of that for the coming fiscal year to help erase the deficit, the officials said Tuesday.

The other $10 billion would be left in a reserve fund the Republican governor wants to create as part of a budget reform proposal. It would be intended to ease the effect of year-to-year revenue fluctuations.

And still there would be pain:
Adding the anticipated $5.1 billion in lottery bond revenue and saving the $4 billion in education spending leaves the administration with some $6 billion in cuts needed to balance the budget.

"This sounds amazing. How does all this work? It sounds risky, almost like a Rubik's cube budget, not a long-term, structurally balanced budget," newly installed Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Emphasis added by me.

The Governator sells everyone out:
In remarks prepared for delivery at a budget briefing Wednesday afternoon, Schwarzenegger said the lottery has been an underperforming asset. His plan would let the lottery pay out more in prizes in hopes of attracting additional revenue.

Last year, California's lottery generated $3.3 billion in total revenue.

Hey, Arnold, given the propensities in your state, why not be bold and really innovate? Create and sell yearly Cocaine Licenses! This way, people who purchase them can legally do coke at their homes without fear of arrest. I'm sure the number of licenses sold would plug the budget for at least the next decade.

Of course, there's always the risk of the license holders dropping dead from overdoses or cardiac failure. But what the hell, this is Pottersville. Good times for all!

The Trinity Of Hell

The Trinity of Hell
The Hon. James David Manning says Oprah Winfrey, Barack Hussein Obama, and Jeremiah Wright are the Trinity of Hell. This message was preached on 10 May 2008.

You can't make up this stuff. Actual quotes:
The Reverend Doctor Jeremiah Wright is a closet homosexual. The Senator Barack Hussein Obama is a closet homosexual. The Oprah Winfrey is a suspected lesbian.

And:
The reason why Senator Barack Hussein Obama stayed within the Trinity of Hell for so long -- for twenty years -- is because of a homosexual relationship with its minister. Thus sayeth the Lord God Almighty [...]

Well, he speaks for himself. I don't think I'll extend another invitation for him to comment via a top-level post. If he wants to, he can leave a Comment like everyone else.

Fox TV Hits A New Low In Low

'Secret Millionaire' set for Fox
The network is set to announce "Secret Millionaire," a new series from RDF USA in which wealthy benefactors go undercover in impoverished neighborhoods. For about 10 days, a multimillionaire meets financially destitute locals and experiences what it's like to live on a meager budget for the first time in their lives. At the show's conclusion, the millionaire reveals his true identity to the community and gives a minimum of $100,000 of his own money to at least one deserving person.

Emphasis added by me.

This is ghastly.

How the hell can someone from the upper strata even begin to experience what someone at the bottom does every damned day?

And in just ten days this person is going to be enlightened?

In just ten days this person is going to judge who's "deserving?"

This reminds me of the self-serving articles that were published beginning in the 1980s by so-called journalists playing "homeless" and then writing about it. As if they could fake the existential, like dressing up as a character on Halloween!

Go ask this guy what's it all about.

What's next, Fox?

Mystery Patient? Someone goes undercover in a hospice to play terminally ill and decides who gets a miracle operation or a lavish funeral or lump sum of money to pass on to survivors?

How about Murder For Hire? Someone poses as a hitman for hire and then you provide fake proof of the murder? If the person who did the hiring shows remorse, you don't press charges. Otherwise, in come the cops to make an arrest! Yeah, you can delude yourself there too that you're doing something "good."

Dennis Potter was right when he named his main terminal cancer tumor after Rupert Murdoch.

Eh.

I don't know what I really expected.

I'm experiencing some of the same crap I did with SP2.

All of it is probably due to the fact this frikkin cheapass PC -- bought several years ago -- cannot have more than 1GB of RAM (in fact, just a little over 3/4ths of a GB!).

Paging Apple Legal: FreeStyl = WinMob iPhone!

The URL is lawsuit fodder by itself: whoneedsaniphone, com
Q: Are you guys just trying to copy the iPhone interface?

A: Not at all. While it is true that the release of Apple's iPhone provided the inspiration to launch the FreeStyl project, the focus of FreeStyl is to provide a sleek, stylish interface to the Windows Mobile platform. We feel that WM is a much more powerful and open system than the iPhone, as evidenced by the thousands of available 3rd party applications available for download. The default interface for Windows Mobile is functional, but not very attractive. FreeStyl is an attempt to translate some design ideas from interfaces like the iPhone onto the Windows Mobile platform.

Here's someone who's gone whole hog, tarting up his iPaq to mimic an iPhone (warning, turn down your speakers!):

The Original Thunderbirds Atrocity

Thunderbirds IR
In September 2005, a QuickTime video file titled Thunderbirds IR was released on several P2P networks. It opens with music by Barry Gray and a few clips of the classic Thunderbirds 1 through 4 launching, then shows several scenes from an intended new Thunderbirds series from Carlton Television. The trailer made with a combination of computer-generated imagery and puppetry depicts scenes including internal sets, external settings, and a sleekly-redesigned Thunderbird 1, Scott Tracy, The Hood, and the rescue of a falling lighthousekeeper. Scott Tracy is seen to walk, and perform a backflip.

The trailer stated that a new Thunderbirds series would be coming in 2005 from Carlton Television and displays a phone number. The series was developed by Carlton with David Freedman as executive producer and David Mercer who was heading the Children's Department at Carlton at the time. Greg Johnson and Bob Forward were lead writers and Asylum did all the set builds and puppet work. Tim Field was line producer. Dave Throssel and a small team from The Mill TV Dept did the CG work. Steve Clarke directed the short. Gerry Anderson met the Carlton team in the early days of development and gave his full blessing. However, when Granada and Carlton merged, the series was shelved until further notice.

Some of the text from that wikipedia snippet is mine, back when it was possible to contribute without a user ID. The second paragraph diverges from mine and adds a lot of information I didn't have.

I was horrified and disgusted when I ran across that video on P2P a few years ago.

Follow-Up On That Canadian Train Illness

Train Death And Series Of Illnesses Unrelated Says Chief Medical Officer Of Health
What initially looked to be a frightening infectious disease outbreak that led to the death of one woman aboard a Via Rail train turned out to be a remarkable series of unconnected coincidences, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, explained during a Friday afternoon press conference.

The elderly woman died during the train ride from Vancouver to Toronto, but health officials say she likely didn't have an infectious disease. Six other passengers also fell ill, with the most serious being rushed to hospital with a respiratory illness of some sort. Officials, however, believe that passenger was suffering from a pre-existing condition, and the five others who were reportedly ill with flu-like symptoms were all determined to have been feeling sick before they boarded the train.

So, it turned out to be just like that masterful novel by Stanislaw Lem: The Chain of Chance.

What's This? iPod Air Next Month?

Suddenly there's a spurt of reports rumormongering that a 3G iPhone isn't the only bit of hardware His Steveness will drop from the sky.

There's talk of am iPod superTouch (ew), an iPlay, a MultiTouch Newton(!), and an unnamed tablet.

It's what I've been calling the iPod Air.

Look at this rumored screen spec:
The alleged device will be about 1.5 times the size of the iPhone and will sport a 720 x 480 display.

Do you know what 720 x 480 is?

HDTV.

Update/correction: Oops! Self-proclaimed HDTV Snob and general tech fiend Kevin Tofel points out my huge and embarrassing error. 720 x 480 is actually standard definition, not HDTV. I denounce myself for seeing just the 720 and immediately jumping to the eejit conclusion that was 720p, despite the fact right there in Big Bold Letters were the words Standard Display Resolutions! Just trust me on this one, the kind of TV I grew up with, we were lucky to get any resolution at all. At least the remainder of my argument isn't wrecked!

But wait, you object. The Asus EeePC and its cohorts came out with 800 x 480 resolution screens and some people complained about horizontal scrolling when using websites.

Yeah, that's true. But the Asus EeePC didn't have a MultiTouch screen with Safari's smart zoom capability. Safari has shown that screen resolution does not have to abide by the historical standards we have accepted. It -- Apple -- broke all those precedents.

So, in fact, it would make perfect sense for an iPod Air (an iPod Deluxe? iPod Plus?) to have a screen that is specifically tailored for high-def video standards. For iPodish entertainment functions.

But there is still an important aspect of this possibility missing.

Sync.

I pointed out here that Apple might be giving us a glimpse of its future sync plans.

Sync has to be a crucial part of Apple's future strategy. It's the glue that binds everything together: desktop, notebooks, satellite devices, .Mac, and its iTunes Store and App Store.

Sync will matter greatly once the productivity apps for the iPod Touch and iPhone begin to flow out of the App Store this year. People will want to move data between their desktops, notebooks, and handheld. And their desktop and notebooks might not necessarily be OS X machines.

This makes sync even more important to Apple, because it will allow it to further encroach into Windows territory. Just as iTunes has the major share of desktop audio players on Windows machines, so too would a sync program supplant all the current strange and incompatible ways people move their data across devices.

So, an iPod Air announcement next month?

Maybe.

But there has to be a sync strategy to accompany it!

Another Update: To understand the importance and need for Apple to do sync, see this Gear Diary post: Playing Mediator Between iCal, Entourage, Exchange and iTunes. Nice coincidence, that showing up today.

Japan Gets Dumb Too

'What are Nazis?' Today's kids can't handle movie subtitles
Subtitle length, however, is just one of the problems related to viewer comprehension.

“After a preview test showing of a certain spy film, members of the audience really surprised me by posing questions like, ‘What is the Soviet Union?’ and ‘What are Nazis?’” a production manager tells the newspaper.

“It appears that growing numbers of young people are unfamiliar with names and words that most Japanese take for granted,” remarks Koji Kikuchi, a veteran subtitler who has worked on some 1,000 films.

Your Phone Might Rat On You

MIT students show power of open cell phone systems
What do you want your cell phone to be able to do?

Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Hal Abelson put that question to about 20 computer science students this semester when he gave them one assignment: Design a software program for cell phones that use Google Inc.'s upcoming Android mobile operating system.

In the process, they revealed the power of an open system like Android to shake up the mobile phone industry, where wireless companies are being pressured to loosen the control they have maintained over what devices do. If the brainstorms of these MIT students are an indication, phones will soon challenge the Internet as a source of innovation.

For these students at least, cell phones should be all about location, location, location. Most of the projects produced by the seven teams of students involved programs that let phones track people's physical place — or that of their friends — to help them do things and meet up.

Wife: Where you last evening, dear?

Husband: At the office, doing a big project.

Wife: Since when is your office in a private home?

Personally, I'm of two minds about this.

1) I really don't want anyone to know where I am.

2) But if I'm passing a store, I would like it to woo my business by telling me I could have ginormous discount on something I want.

What about you?

Blog Notes: What's TypePad Like?

Anyone out there who has experience in the three blogging platforms I know about? That is, WordPress, Blogger, and TypePad?

Blogger is not my cup of tea, but it's free. I'm lacking Categories and I see no way to get blog stats or Dashboard notification of Comments left. And you can see the mess it's made of my custom image header.

WordPress has the Smiley Nazi problem. They think they can justify the shit they pull by crying, "It's free!"

TypePad I see I would have to pay for. And of course the only level worth getting runs $150.00 a year! But I also notice that I could post by email. That's an interesting feature to me.

When this blog dies at the end of the year (either here before then or simultaneously here and at Blogger), I'll want a new venue.

I don't think WordPress will ever set things right with me. They're become smug. And smug = FAIL.

I see TypePad has a 14-day free trial, but I don't want to set up something and then decide to go no further. Yeah, I could do a throwaway test blog, but still.

HSBC write-downs 'should be $50bn'
Knight Vinke, the activist shareholder laying siege to HSBC, today accused the bank of massively understating its probable losses on US subprime debt, suggesting it should have written off another $25 billion or more to be as prudent as its biggest rivals.

The shareholder activist, which has made renewed attacks on HSBC's strategy since last year, accused the bank of failing to apply the same conservative accounting standards to measuring sub-prime debt as rivals.

Knight Vinke said: "If HSBC's accounting for its sub-prime assets had been as conservative as that of other banks its cumulative write down for sub-prime and related losses would now stand at approximately $50 billion in total rather than $25 billion - which makes HSBC the biggest causality of the sub-prime crisis so far."

Emphasis added by me.

I have to admit, I know nothing about HSBC and turned to wikipedia for this shocking news:
HSBC Holdings plc (LSE: HSBA, SEHK: 0005, NYSE: HBC, Euronext: HSBC, BSX: 1077223879) is a public limited company incorporated in England and Wales, headquartered in London. It is the world's largest company and the world's largest banking group, as calculated by the annual Forbes list of the world's largest firms published on April 2, 2008. In February 2008, HSBC was named the world's most valuable banking brand by The Banker magazine.

Emphasis added by me. I lightly edited that paragraph for better formatting.

And, of course, wikipedia shows its unreliability:
HSBC is well-known in banking circles for its diversified and risk-averse approach in its business operations (to the extent that, for instance, Europe contributes around one-third of its 2007 earnings and commercial banking 30%). Remarkably, HSBC has emerged from the recent American financial turmoil probably the least damaged of all the big banks, while it maintains its involvement in investment banking relatively (and to some critics, unduly) cautious and conservative.

Emphasis added by me.

I have to wonder. If it turns out HSBC has been hiding catastrophic losses, what about its competitors?

Tick tick tick ...

Taxpayer will be left footing bill in another Northern Rock-style crisis
The taxpayer will have to bail out savers if any of Britain's top 25 lenders runs into a Northern Rock-style crisis, the Treasury has admitted.
New details have emerged that show the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) can call on a maximum of just £4bn from banks and insurers in the event of a collapse. However, each of the top 25 banks and building societies has customer deposits far in excess of £4bn.

HBOS, Britain's largest deposit taker, had £111bn last year, reveal papers from the Financial Services Authority.

Emphasis added by me.

Yes, that's England, but it's bad over there too. They had their own real estate bubble (also with soaring rents). They're also affected by skyrocketing food and energy prices. And some screwball loans have been made (how many? who knows? and will we ever know?).

More bank collapses are expected here in America, so why not there too?

Young Writer Success

That Face: into the West End, raw power intact
Polly Stenham wrote That Face when she was 19, saw it receive a shatteringly powerful production at the Royal Court when she was 20 and now, at 21, is the youngest dramatist to have a play performed in the West End for more than 40 years.

These must be sweet, heady and disorienting days for Ms Stenham. I hope those with the responsibility of handling her career are keeping her feet on the ground.

When That Face opened at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in April 2007, I described it as one of the most astonishing dramatic debuts I had seen in more than 30 years of reviewing.

Watching this West End transfer, the play seems every bit as fresh, passionate and blackly comic the second time around. She has a prodigious talent and it needs to be cherished and nurtured.

Emphasis added by me.

It will be interesting to see if her career goes anywhere. It will be interesting to watch press coverage of her. I expect her second play to get a savaging. That's usually the way these things work.

Red Headlines For May 12, 2008

Gas tops $4 a gallon on Long Island
With Memorial Day still two weeks away, what many have feared is now a reality: This weekend, several gas stations on Long Island began to post prices of more than $4 a gallon. And that's for the no-frills, regular, 87-octane stuff.

According to the AAA, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline on Long Island on Sunday was $3.947 a gallon -- a new high, and the highest of all the regions in the state. A year ago, it was $3.191. Yesterday's national average was $3.707 a gallon, also a new high, up from $3.053 a year ago. In New York City, the average reached a new high of $3.945 a gallon yesterday, up from $3.202 a year ago.

Emphasis added by me.

Remember, our election-stealing war criminal Eejit-In-Chief "hadn't heard" of $4/gallon gas.

Do you think he does now?

I can't get the front page of the NY Post for this one, so the website graphic will have to do:

TROUBLE IN LI PARADISE
May 12, 2008 -- Homeowners in the some of the toniest ZIP codes in the Hamptons are facing a frightening reality - they can't afford to foot the bill for their high-priced homes, The Post has learned.

In the first three months of this year, banks have launched preliminary foreclosure actions - known as lis pendens proceedings - against a record 120 borrowers in East Hampton and Southampton towns.

Twenty percent of those borrowers live in homes that are worth more than $1 million, according to figures from the Suffolk County clerk.

And the list gets longer every week.

Awwwww, poor babies.

A World Without Slack

Code for Pizza
There is nothing I’d rather do than give up this day job with $BIG_COMPANY and survive on my writing while I whiled away the days trying to learn to code to maybe build an app that I want. Apparently (according to a thread on Twitter) startup businesses require passion and if you’re not willing to code for pizza then you’re not showing passion. And not showing any balls.

That’s shite.

I can’t do this because I have responsibilities. I have a mortgage, kids to feed, a house to run. It’s just not an option. And the answer I get? Rent! WTF? Have you seen the prices of rental properties these days? You might as well pay a mortgage because at least then you have a long term gain in equity.

This very interesting post highlights the issue of the way the world has changed since the early 1960s.

Back then, it was entirely possible to step on the bottom rung of the Life Ladder -- rent an apartment and become an individual -- with a low-level job, like cashier or stock clerk or office filing clerk (yes, there were such things once!).

Today, that's next to impossible.

As he notes, rents are just about the equivalent of mortgage payments -- with the bonus of possibly having to deal with a Nazi landlord who believes he or she can prohibit pets, visitors, smoking, etc.

Society has gone from one in which slack was plentiful to one where slack is altogether gone. It's been exterminated.

Is it greed that's done that? Are the right-wing fringe correct that government deficit spending has pissed away the value of our money and devalued it to the level of toilet paper? What explains what has happened?

The latent paranoid-conspiratorial part of me says this is the way They (whoever they be) want it. As pointed out here, in a different context, it's Feudalism 2.0.

Eejits such as Tom Wolfe can delude themselves into thinking we can sustain what's going on for centuries, but I don't think so. People are cranky not because of their personality or termperament (like me!) but because they feel The Squeeze, daily, moment-by-moment. They have had their ability to enjoy life drained away from them. They can feel that they're all on a treadmill they never chose -- or expected -- and one false move can mean losing everything.

This can't be sustained. Something is going to give.

hp Mini Note: Both PATA AND SATA?

Upgrading the HP2133 mini-note hard drive (with photos)

This is very odd.

He's replaced the SSD supplied by hp with a hard drive.

I didn't think that was possible because, as I noted here, the SSD is PATA and the hard drive is SATA.

I left a comment and asked for clarification.

If such a swap is indeed possible with no throttling of the hard drive, it might entice more people to get the cheapest model and carry out DIY upgrades.

Microsoft's ULCPC Nazism = Good News!

By now, I expect most people have heard how Microsoft expects to severely restrict the hardware capacity of subnotebooks (ULCPCS, Ultra-Low-Cost PCs) that run Windows XP.
limit screen sizes to 10.2 inches

hard drives to 80G bytes

no touch-screens

no more than 1G byte of RAM and

a single-core processor running at no more than 1GHz. The program makes an allowance for some chips, including Via Technologies' C7-M processors, which run between 1.0GHz and 1.6GHz, and Intel's upcoming Atom N270.

Aside from the touchscreen prohibition, the rest is actually good news.

I can see clever subnotebook makers now redesigning their units to get around those prohibitions.

Easier access to RAM and hard drives, so users can open up the units and put in more RAM and a larger drive.

Subnotebook makers telling Intel they want their CPUs to be socketed, not soldered. So we can pull out those too and drop in better ones.

By restricting the hardware, Microsoft has now guaranteed that these units will plummet in price. I anticipate basic units will drop to the $200-$300 range.

Microsoft will probably try to pull something inside XP itself to check system configuration and, once connected to the Internet, rat back to Borg HQ if the specs exceed their restrictions.

And then the revolt against Microsoft will begin in earnest.

Get with the users, Microsoft: we don't want Vista!

Meanwhile, while all this race-to-the-bottom pricing goes on, Apple will ensure its own future with customized chips that offer better performance, unique features, and higher prices.

Microsoft doesn't need to be killed. It's just announced its own suicide.

iPhone Continues To Swallow The Internet

Michael Connick reports:
NBC now has a very nice iPhone/Touch-optimized Web site. It even allows you to watch full episodes from a couple of its shows. None of the other major TV networks have anything like it. Good job NBC!

That's very interesting. How many other phones have had this kind of impact on the Internet?

As far as I know: none.

Not Palm, not Windows Mobile, and certainly not Symbian. I'm not sure if Android will accomplish this. Forget ACCESS altogether.

Financial Times has a multi-part video interview with NBC's Jeff Zucker.

It's a chore to concentrate on his words with that monstrosity around his neck, but he does mention Apple in this portion.

Redfly: I Don't Get It. It's Nuts!

Matthew Miller over at ZDNet Blogs has received the Celio Redfly he ordered.

This is a device that is basically an external dumb terminal to what is already not the brightest kid on the block: a Windows Mobile smartphone.

The Redfly costs a whopping $499.00 -- and offers far less than an EeePC at $400!

And let me note:

Asus Eee
8.86″ x 6.30″ x 0.79-1.26″ - 2.0 lbs

Celio Redfly
9.0″ x 6.0″ x 1.0″ - 2 lbs

To strengthen the comparison!

As if the Redfly pricetag alone wasn't already orbital, Miller is pairing it with an HTC Advantage -- something with a price that ranges from $800 to $1,000!

That's a total price of $1,300 to $1,500!

I think that's just nuts.

Pay attention, this is from Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, the sharpest chronicler of this mess.

The global slump of 2008-09 has begun as poison spreads
The avalanche of bankruptcies has begun. Six US companies of substance have defaulted on bonds over the past fortnight, against 17 for the whole of last year.

As a "non-believer" in the instant rebound story, I am not easily shocked by gloomy reports. But the latest note by Standard & Poor's - The Bust After The Boom - gave me a fright.

The sick list is varied, though most for now are victims of the housing crash: Linens 'n Things, ($650m), Kimball Hill ($703m), Home Interiors ($310m), French Lick Resorts ($142m), Recycled Paper Greetings ($187m), and Tropicana Entertainment ($2.49bn).

Emphasis added by me.

Not scary enough?
As the Fed's latest loan survey makes clear, lenders have dropped the guillotine. With the usual delay, the poison is spreading from banks to the real world.

Diane Vazza, S&P's credit chief, says defaults are rising at almost twice the rate of past downturns. "Companies are heading into this recession with a much more toxic mix. Their margin for error is razor-thin," she said.

Two-thirds have a "speculative" rating, compared to 50pc before the dotcom bust, and 40pc in the early 1990s. The culprit is debt. "They ramped it up in the last 18 months of the credit boom. A lot of deals were funded that should not have been funded," she said.

Some 174 US companies are trading at "distress levels". Spreads on their bonds have rocketed above 1,000 basis points. This does not cover the carnage among smaller firms outside the rating universe.

Emphasis added by me.

This is where, again, I must otherwise disagree:
Thankfully, the Fed's monetary blitz has averted a depression. Emergency lending under the "unusual and exigent circumstances" clause of the Fed Act - the nuclear Article 13 (3), unused since the 1930s - has put a floor under the banking system.

There will be no "reset Armaggedon" as rates vault on honey-trap mortgages. Drastic Fed cuts - to 2pc from 5.25pc in September - have conjured away that disaster, at least.

Emphasis added by me.

Ambrose, of course, means "All other things remaining the same."

But things won't!

Something is going to come along, even if it would in normal times be considered a breeze, and blow over this house of cards.

See, even Ambrose records more is on the way:
"Nowhere and nothing will be immune. We are on the cusp of an equity meltdown that will slash and shred portfolios," said Albert Edward, SG's global strategist.

"We see a global recession unfolding. Liquidity will drain away and crush the twin emerging market and commodity bubbles. The recent hope that 'the worst might be over' is truly staggering. Profits are disintegrating," he said.

Emphasis added by me.

Accuse me of being overly pessimistic? What about him? That quote is from a financial expert!
Lehman Brothers' Sun Mingchun says China will tip over in the second half of this year. "With so much latent overcapacity, an export-led slowdown could trigger a chain reaction which, in the worst case, could threaten the stability of [its] financial and economic system," he said.

Britain, Europe, Japan, and China will go down before America comes back up. This is turning into a synchronised bust, after all. The Global Slump of 2008-09 is under way.

Emphasis added by me.

Soothe the jitters by calling it a slump. But it's not!

And it won't feel like one, either.

Losing a Home, Then Losing All Out of Storage
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. — The foreclosure crisis is hitting yet another American locale: the self-storage center.

As they lose their homes, people are turning to these humble cinderblock and sheet-metal boxes to store their stuff. But some people cannot keep up with their storage bills any better than they could handle their mortgage payments, and storage companies are auctioning off their property for a pittance.

Emphasis added by me.

More:
Subprime mortgage loans had low “teaser” rates to lure borrowers. Many storage facilities offer the first month for free.

“You tell yourself, ‘I’m only going to put my things in for a short time,’ ” Mr. Blair said. “Before you know it, you’re behind. Then you have to pay penalties and interest. You owe $400 to $500. If you lost your job, you can’t come up with that, not if you want to feed your family.”

Nearly non-existent 35 years ago, self-storage has become ubiquitous, with 51,000 facilities nationwide. Even as the larger economy falters, the industry is flourishing. Executives say the mortgage crisis is one reason.

Emphasis added by me.

Don't ever, ever, ever turn to one of these places. Sell off what you have to, get down to your core belongings. Then impose on friends and relatives to store that.

If you put anything in storage, you are just about guaranteed to lose it.

These people are lower than outright slumlords.

At least a slumlord will admit that's what he is.
Fred Reger, an auctioneer in Washington and its suburbs, is seeing two trends, which he calls “matching luggage” and “residential units.”

The first means that he often sees a bunch of over-stuffed plastic bags when he opens a unit. “People used to put their belongings in boxes,” Mr. Reger said. “But Hefties are a lot cheaper. These people came in under stress, which explains why they defaulted a few months later.”

A “residential unit” is one where the renter tries to illegally live in the unit. “We used to see one or two residential units a month,” Mr. Reger said. “Now I’m seeing 6 or 8 or 10. At one facility in D.C. the other day, we had three residentials.”

Look at how they laugh at someone else's misery!

Federal regulators close Arkansas bank ANB Financial
As of Jan. 31, federal regulators say ANB Financial had about $2.1 billion in assets and $1.8 billion in total deposits.

It was the third closure this year of an FDIC-insured bank. Douglass National Bank, a Missouri bank with $58.5 million in assets, was shut in January; another Missouri institution with assets of $18.7 million, Hume Bank, was shut down in March.

Both were dwarfed in size of ANB Financial, where regulators found lax lending standards, mostly for construction and development loans for projects in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, as well as Arkansas.

Emphasis added by me.

But notice this:
The FDIC is planning to beef up its staff, including temporarily hiring up to 25 retired FDIC employees who worked in the agency's more than 200-person division that handles failed banks. They will handle an anticipated increase in bank failures.

Don't wait.

TV Gets The Bottomfeeders

TV viewership still down in wake of 100-day writers strike
Comedies were hurt least by the strike. CBS was so buoyed by the performance of their Monday night comedies that the network is considering adding comedies on another night.

Who watches that crap?

People who don't know what humor is.

People who would laugh at someone throwing up.

In other words, the lowest of the lowest demographic, education and income-wise.

Oh, but TV is really gonna reach out and grab us people on the Net, with innovation such as this:
Not surprising for television, some of the ideas have a whiff of familiarity. Cedric the Entertainer is developing a comedy for ABC about a suddenly rich family moving to Beverly Hills ("then one day he was shooting for some food, and up through the ground come a bubbling crude").

Wow.

But wait, Nikki Finke reported:
I am also told that two ABC comedy pilots, The More Things Change (Regency) and the Untitled Cedric The Entertainer (ABC TV Studios), are dead at the network.

So much for innovation!

WordPress Export File = 7.33MB!

Holy cow.

But that also includes a bunch of drafts that have been growing mold on them.

I'll have to see if Blogger can import that some way.

Any suggestions?

Two Days Of Posts Moved

Today's and yesterday's posts are now over at Blogger.

Tomorrow I'll have to see what the WordPress Export feature can do for me.

In the meantime, bookmark the Blogger URL!

Fugly For A While

If any stalkers actually traveled over here, things will be fugly for a while.

I learned how to properly scale embedded Veoh vids (which can be embedded, thank God!, with embed code instead of that vodpod shit WordPress uses).

Tomorrow I'll figure out the damned header.

In Case WordPress Is Run By Pricks

I've duplicated today's posts over at my standby Blogger backup.

I set that up the evening where WordPress unilaterally sprung the Friday Evening Change on everyone without considering the disruption it would cause. And then they shut down the first Support forum thread of complaints!

So yeah, I expect them to kick me out of here.

Hey WordPress, dig this.

STFU

Ever made a complaint in a forum that is there to permit complaints?

And then had some Prozacked-up eejit jump in and complain about your complaint?

It just happened to me in the WordPress Support forum.

I slapped the eejit down hard too.

First time I've had to skrag anyone on the forum.

The deal with forums, you la-la smiley-faced eejits is this: They are there for venting.

If you want to be the Happy Police, go do it in your own life, where you'll get in person what I'd like to do to you virtually: kick the living shit out of you for being so goddammed clueless and obnoxious.

You just don't know how much I'd like to show you the worthless blog of this cretin.

But it doesn't deserve traffic from here and I think better of my readers too (despite the PoeFace post!).

Update: Look at this bullshit. I've just been locked out of the WordPress Supoort forum! Staff apparently likes the Smiley Police who have no answers! I was told, and I quote:
If you wish to insult, use your blog because you are not using the forums.

Well, here it is. A nice crisp Up Yours! And you know who you are, WordPress staff member.

Now for a formal complaint to WordPress Support via email.

Let's see if I have to wind up moving to Blogger after all.

PAY To See Iron Man, Dammit

I've seen a new cammed version of Iron Man making the rounds.

This one is different than the one I saw.

No Chinese subtitles.

But I note the run time excises the end titles.

Serves you cheapskate thieving bastards right. You'll miss a key point!

Now go out and buy a ticket and see it for real.

It's worth it!

I'm Starting To Duplicate My WordPress Posts

Right, the bullshit that just occurred in WordPress Support today really irks me.

So, I'm going to see if I can maintain the discipline of running posts both at my WordPress blog and this one.

That way, if I have tell WordPress to go fuck themselves, you'll know where I am after they've shut me down.

And in the meantime, Mark: Go fuck yourself.

England Continues To Fall

Police hunt girl gang who poured liquid through letterbox of London blast house
A gang of girls may have used the internet to make a bomb that killed a man and destroyed three homes in their feud with another teenager.

Former classmates of Charlotte Anderson, 17, are being sought by police after a blast destroyed her flat, an apartment above and two neighbouring cottages in Harrow, northwest London.

Miss Anderson suffered serious blast injuries and Emad Qureshi, 26, her neighbour, was killed in the explosion at 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Get this:
The explosion damaged homes and offices within a 100-metre radius and 40 people were still unable to return to their homes last night as police began to search the rubble. Friends said that Miss Anderson had been involved in arguments with other girls about her boyfriend but police said that this was not part of their investigation.

Girls did that! Girls!

Ralph Nader: Activist Presidential Candidate

I can't think of any other candidate for the American Presidency who has ever taken time out from a campaign to join protestors against the government!

This is an eight-minute video about how Washington -- as usual -- wants to betray our interests as well as use the law against us.

If you drive (and I don't!), you need to pay attention to this.

The Cato Institute Is Always Good For A Laugh

I was looking for a chart of the per-gallon price of gas (I wanted to see what it was when I was a kid; why rely on my memory?). I failed in that search. But I came across this howler of an article: Gasoline Prices in Perspective

It's not even worth my time to point out the inherent stupidity in it.

Tom Wolfe: Stupid Or Simply Insane?

The Word According to Tom Wolfe: Chapter 5 of 5
Tom Wolfe and America? He loves the place, a position that puts him at odds with much of the charming aristocracy. He’s also an optimist about America — and American greatness. “The biggest problem,” says Wolfe, “is all the people who see a problem.”

"Charming aristocracy?" Just about the same type of assholes who self-designate themselves A(sshole)-Listers on the Net. That cohort of people would all overdose on pills if The New Yorker ever went out of business.

Anyway, Wolfe ... on the verge of Alzheimer's? Or has he always been unable to mentally compose and let loose with a sentence lacking a profusion of potholes?

He's wrong about the Vietnam War. I damn well can recall what was all wrong about it: it was undeclared, the draft affected the lowest classes (hey, Limbaugh, did you serve? I was months away from Selective Service lottery eligibility when it ended), we weren't in it to win, and its conclusion didn't stop the spread of Communism in Asia. Wolfe is either surrounded by fellow bumbling eejits or the drugs have wiped out their memories.

Drudge linked to this clip because Wolfe states he doesn't see any reason why there shouldn't be "eight hundred" American centuries. Again, I have to question the functioning of his mind. Does he really, really think what's going on now can be sustained? If he that out of touch with reality?

Well, look at the frikkin suit he always wears.

So yeah. Next!

Big Asus e900 Review

eeeuser.com EeePC 900 in-depth review

It's ginormous!

I haven't read it all yet, but I did go through the Comments and learned that the e7xx and the e900 batteries are the same physical size. Asus wasn't tempted to obsolete the existing battery.

Despite my admonition to myself, I'm still reading up on everything.

hp has gone out of its head, offering versions of the Mini Note that practically go into orbit with near- and above-$800 prices!

The entire charm of the original EeePC was its "disposable" price. Like every other tech eejit, I seem to have lost track of that in the shower of "Can it do this?" questions.

Even the $549 for the e900 is I think misguided. I wish Asus would do what I suggest and get prices back to a tempting level.

Tonight's TV: Monopoly!

Primetime Pilot Panic: Even Hotter Info
To date my April 24th "Hot List" of primetime pilots is holding up. But one alarming trend I'm seeing is that Big Media is demonstrating even more reluctance than usual to develop pilots their studios and networks don't own. This is yet one more reason so many primetime scripted series fail.

Emphasis added by me.

Stephen J. Cannell saw the handwriting on the wall over a decade ago. He was one of the next generation of TV producers (after Aaron Spelling, Quinn Martin, Jack Webb, etc) and had a string of successes. He had every reason to remain in television: it provided him with a great life and allowed him to do what he liked and what he was great at doing.

All that changed when the walls came down, allowing the TV networks to own their programs instead of having to negotiate with outside producers for airing rights.

This is one of the reasons independent producers such as Gerry Anderson and his thirty-million dollar New Captain Scarlet series failed to enter the American television market in the same manner his string of prior successes over three decades could.

The game has become: If it ain't mine, forget it!

This is not a free market. This is a collection of monopolies and trusts holding the airwaves -- first analog, and now digital -- captive to the detriment of everyone, producers and audience.

Imagine if suddenly your website or blog had to be part of a large conglomerate so you could remain on the Internet. Imagine that the costs became so prohibitive to create a web presence that you had no choice other than to seek employment at a large corporation in order to have a web outlet. And then, just like all other employees, you'd be a cog in a huge machine and no one would know who the hell you are.

Quick: Name three writers from Engadget, from Gizmodo, from Ars Technica.

You can't.

And that is the future the corporations want.

You don't matter: only the corporate brand matters.

And all profits -- every single strange fraction of a penny -- is vacuumed up for the "good" of that inhuman entity.

You are just an employee. You can be replaced. Especially because you're unknown.

Quick: Name the producers of Numb3rs, Ugly Betty, and E.R..

You can't!

ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC are the Wendy's, McDonald's, Arby's, and Burger King of entertainment. Just as those fast-food mongers have only a shadow relationship to actual food, so do the four major TV entities have an increasingly-distant relationship to creative, unique, compelling, and individually-crafted entertainment. (If you think otherwise, they've already subverted your mind to their purposes!)

Nikki Finke is the brightest person covering the entertainment field. What's happening there is just a prelude to what they expect to do to the Internet. Watch what's going on with Comcast and Time Warner and the rumors of tiered Internet service. Watch the battle for Net Neutrality being waged in D.C.. They are trying for a grab. They are always trying for a grab.

They succeeded with television.

Are we going to let them steal the Internet too?

Apple's Sync Strategy Finally Arriving?

Rumor: .Mac relaunch to coincide with iPhone 2.0?
According to our little birdy, .Mac could undergo the following changes as soon as next month:

Full over-the-air syncing including calendars, contacts, and email (similar to Exchange)

.Mac syncing on Windows

I guess things just take longer than I expect.

But I've been waiting ...
Apple has its own sync program: iSync.

Apple could expand it into a sync-anything program that would transfer many kinds of files between an iPhone, a desktop Mac, and a Foleo-like Flash RAM-based “satellite Mac.”

Where the Foleo concentrates on email sync, a “satellite Mac” would not be so choosy. Apple’s iSync could be a sync slut, permitting anything — text, spreadsheet, photo, audio, maybe even short video — to move seamlessly between Bluetooth and WiFi-capable Apple devices.

Plus, just as it did with the Safari browser, Apple could develop and release — for free! — a PC version of iSync.

... and waiting ...
Yeah, you’ll iSync files back and forth from these smaller MacBooks to a Mac (and maybe even PC) desktop. Think of it as iTunes For Your Other Files.

... and waiting ...
5) iSync being enhanced

... for Apple to reveal syncing. It's going to be very important to them.

iSync: Key Apple Ingredient

Nokia aiming to reinvent itself as an "Internet company"
"Our goal is to act less like a traditional manufacturer, and more like an internet company," Kallasvuo told his shareholders. "Companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft are not our traditional competitors, but they are major forces that must be reckoned with. Make no mistake: We are taking on these challenges seriously and aggressively."

OK, that company is in its death spiral, as I predicted and expected post-iPhone.

Nokia saw the promise of the Internet very, very early.

That it has been a non-player all this time is very telling.

This is a company with a personality -- both internally and nationally -- that is incompatible with Internet Thinking.

They rose to the top of the cellphone heap not because they were excellent, but because their competitors were just atrocious.
It sounds like Nokia is going to spend less time on hardware design, new distinct handset models, and so forth (though I'd be shocked if the company gave up on hardware entirely), in favor of more and better software.

I wouldn't be.

Their vaunted Internet Tablet -- which they expected to save the company -- has gone nowhere (and deservedly so!). All those Palm users they thought they'd grab -- it never happened.

Their phones are just ... phones. They can tart them up with Zeiss lenses and the like but they're still clunky and uncool. They are for pinstripers; corporate dullards who left to decide on their own go with the seemingly safest choice. None of them are leadership devices.

Outside of people who buy Nokia, the company has no Internet presence. And it never will have one.

They probably think they buy their way in through acquisitions (Murdoch would be glad to burden you with MySpace!). But anything they touch will automaically be deemed DOA.

Nokia: Gone in five years.

175. The price of oil: peak petroleum production and energy economics in a thirsty world
Let’s be clear. This isn’t about $100 oil. In the near future you can add another 50%, or even double that figure, and just keep on going.

What’s the world going to look like with oil at $200, $300, $400 a barrel? That’s a crazy notion – it sounds like madness. And if you think so, then just go back and read this post again.

So, let me reiterate. The price of oil has risen 900% within the last nine years. It rose 50%, year-on-year inside the last twelve months to reach that $100 peak. Maybe not tomorrow, but before too long, you can double that again. And after that, you can just keep on going.

Emphasis added by me.

The end of cheap oil brings with it the end of cheap food, the end of cheap housing.

The end of cheap everything.

All of those people living in the Northeast (hey, that's me!) are going to start looking for warmer areas to live it. This coming winter's home heating bills with be a multiple of their monthly mortgage payments.

In New York City, fuel pass-along adjustments by landlords will rock the city.

Chronicles Of Depression 2.0: #091

Drudge is a bit premature here. He's citing another version of what I cited earlier today.

The price quote is the same: $125.98.

Sure, argue over those two cents all you want. But multiply that over the total flow and that's a lot of money. Better we still have it than them.

Still, $126 for sure by day's end -- if not $127.

Update: It's here. Over $126/barrel.

Oil surpasses $126 per barrel ahead of US driving season

Oil prices surpassed a record $126 per barrel Friday on the eve of the U.S. driving season as a weakening dollar drove investors to snap up commodities.

Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose $2.51 to a new record of $126.20 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by the afternoon in Europe.

On Thursday, the contract rose to a record close of $123.69 a barrel.

Emphasis added by me.

The day's not over yet.

Anyone for $127?

China Understands Food Security. Why Don't We?

China eyes overseas land in food push
Chinese companies will be encouraged to buy farmland abroad, particularly in Africa and South America, to help guarantee food security under a plan being considered by Beijing.

A proposal drafted by the Ministry of Agriculture would make supporting offshore land acquisition by domestic agricultural companies a central government policy. Beijing already has similar policies to boost offshore investment by state-owned banks, manufacturers and oil companies, but offshore agricultural investment has so far been limited to a few small projects.

If approved, the plan could face intense opposition abroad given surging global food prices and deforestation fears. However an official close to the deliberations said it was likely to be adopted.

“There should be no problem for this policy to be approved. The problem might come from foreign governments who are unwilling to give up large areas of land,” the official said.

The move comes as oil-rich but food-poor countries in the Middle East and north Africa explore similar options. Libya is talking with Ukraine about growing wheat in the former Soviet republic, while Saudi Arabia has said it would invest in agricultural and livestock projects abroad to ensure food security and control commodity prices.

China is losing its ability to be self-sufficient in food as its rising wealth triggers a shift away from diet staples such as rice towards meat, which requires large amounts of imported feed.

Emphasis added by me.

And what do we have?

Calls for the accelerated use of Frankenfoods!

But basic food security? Nothing!

Wars And Rumors Of War ...

South Korean internet geeks trigger panic over US 'tainted beef' imports
Tens of thousands of young internet-obsessed South Koreans, whipped into a frenzy by alarmist television programmes, a complex scientific paper on genetics and a hyperactive online rumour-mill, have held candlelit vigils protesting against imports of American beef.

Believing that the meat carries a high risk of BSE and that Koreans are genetically predisposed to contracting the linked Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the online masses have taken to the streets, cursing America and demanding that their Government should act to avert catastrophe.

Two features of the protests have caught the authorities, the Government and teachers offguard.

The first is that, unlike the mobs that have contributed to South Korea's long history of street rallies, more than half of the demonstrators are below university age.

Some teachers approve of the rallies, others condemn them, but all agree that their students are spending too much time in cyberspace.

The second is the virulence of the xenophobia on and offline: despite sweeping to power on a more foreigner-friendly ticket, Lee Myung Bak, South Korea's new President, leads a country with substantial anti-American feeling.

Emphasis added by me.

Given their ages, this could be called The MySpace Revolution.

I didn't know anti-American feeling was still so strong over there.

But I'm not surprised. If I was outside America, I'd resent the way we do business too (I already resent it while being an American). We act as if our playbook was The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

Chronicles Of Depression 2.0: #090

Oil surpasses $125 per barrel ahead of US driving season
Oil prices surged past $125 per barrel Friday on the eve of the U.S. driving season as a weakening U.S. dollar drove investors to snap up commodities.

Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose as high as $125.12 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at midday before falling back to $124.86 by early afternoon in Europe.

On Thursday, the contract rose to a record close of $123.69 a barrel.

Emphasis added me me.

One-third of this year is over. It's gone from hitting the astounding $100/barrel at the start of 2008 to $125.

Stockbrokers will argue that "past results are no guarantee of future performance," but I'd say we're on our way to $200/barrel oil by 2009.

The day has just begun.

I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of this day, East Coast Time, it hits $126/barrel.

The U.S. dollar has nowhere else to go but down. This leaves oil with no ceiling.

Expect more stories about the price of food jumping too.

For anyone coming to this blog late, this is the outlook I published back on January 1st: And Now A Word About Our Future…

No change.
