Writer Mark Billingham On eBooks, More

From the Eleventh Mark Billingham Newsletter (sent via email):
I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to the digital revolution and how it might affect the world of books, as my publishers, together with the rest of them, rush to embrace the new technology. The new generation of e-readers has produced some extremely nifty devices, but will they ever really take off? Will the downloading of books ever become as influential as the downloading of songs?

Certainly, they can come in very handy. Just imagine this handy little gadget containing all the works of Bellow, Roth and Mailer. How useful would that would be for students of American literature? One loaded up with the novels of Philip. K. Dick and Arthur C Clarke for science fiction fans. Or one containing the collected works of Jeffrey Archer, for soldiers to hand out to inmates at Guantanamo Bay, now that water-boarding has been outlawed. I’m joking, obviously! This collection of metal, circuits and software could never replace the printed works of Mr Archer.

Well, it doesn’t burn nearly as well, does it?

Mark is a funny guy. (He better be! He once made his coin doing stand-up comedy!)

Here's something that doesn't happen to everyone:
“OH, MANCHESTER, SO MUCH TO ANSWER FOR…”

Those that recognise the Smiths’ lyric will know it comes from their moody masterpiece “Suffer Little Children” – a haunting song about the Moors Murders. These horrible killings, which cost the lives of five children in the mid-sixties still exert a powerful grip on the public imagination while the couple that carried them out, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, continue to loom large whenever ‘evil’ is discussed.

I have been filming a documentary about Brady and Hindley – one which concentrates on the two of them rather than the crimes they committed – in an effort to understand the twisted chemistry that caused this couple to do what they did. It has been a fascinating, if sobering experience, not least reading a letter which Ian Brady sent to me from the prison/hospital where he remains after forty-five years, waiting to die.

This is the first in a series of four programmes about couples who have killed and will go out on the History Channel’s ‘Crime & Investigation’ network sometime in October. I doubt that anything I see or hear during the making of the remaining programmes will make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up quite as much as the last words of Brady’s letter:

“The ball is yours…”

Read up on the Moors Murders via wikipedia.

Mark is one of those lucky writers whose books actually get TV ads:

That's for the latest in his series of crime novels featuring Detective Thorne.

For those who would rather sample Billingham without committing to an entire series first, he has a new standalone crime novel called In the Dark that hits the U.K. August 7th and the U.S. several months later. Visit his site for more details.

Phone home: Purported UFO video to be shown Friday
A video that purportedly shows a living, breathing space alien will be shown to the news media Friday in Denver.

Jeff Peckman, who is pushing a ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver to prepare the city for close encounters of the alien kind, said the video is authentic and convinced him that aliens exist.

Oh geez. I bet this will turn out to be the same video I saw on YouTube.

Fake as all hell.

No, I don't recall the URL. I was just browsing around and came across a multi-part series about some guy out in the woods who accidentally shot an alien. Absolutely unconvincing.

WordPress Is Bad News Today

That's the JPEG that isn't appearing in my WordPress post.

I don't know why.

WordPress's code vandals are probably hacking away at the mess they've made again and damaging more things in the process.

They've been tweaking the Post area. Not enough to suit me (as usual).

Stay here for today.

Go back to WordPress tomorrow.

WordPress Is Still Unwell

I'm having another problem posting at WordPress.

If you heeded my advice and have been monitoring this backup blog, you just got another post well before it will appear on WordPress.

Everything Google does is half-assed, half-baked, and undeveloped.

jscott:
Oh, I don't know, I like this search engine they've been demoing.

WordPress FAIL!

WordPress is failing to publish my first post of the day, about Android.

I should have known trouble was ahead when I couldn't get to my WordPress stats page.

Now the entire Post system is failing to appear!

If you haven't bookmarked this Blogger backup blog, do so now.

So you can be informed about things such as this.

Android Mania!

Seriously!

The amount of traffic that's come to this blog from yesterday's post about Android is just incredible.

You lot are just as obsessed as the people panting for the MSI Wind.

Probably moreso!

Right. I'm convinced now that I'll have to keep a closer eye on Android developments.

Chronicles Of Depression 2.0: #113

Sales of Spam rise as consumers trim food costs
Sales of Spam — that much maligned meat — are rising as consumers are turning more to lunch meats and other lower-cost foods to extend their already stretched food budgets.

What was once cheeky, silly and the subject of a musical (as Monty Python mocked the meat in a can), is now back on the table as people turn to the once-snubbed meat as costs rise, analysts say.

Food prices are increasing faster than they've risen since 1990, at 4 percent in the U.S. last year, according to the Agriculture Department. Many staples are rising even faster, with white bread up 13 percent last year, bacon up 7 percent and peanut butter up 9 percent.

There's no sign of a slowdown. Food inflation is running at an annualized rate of 6.1 percent as of April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The price of Spam is up too, with the average 12 oz. can costing about $2.62. That's an increase of 17 cents, or nearly 7 percent, from the same time last year. But it's not stopping sales, as the pork meat in a can seems like a good alternative to consumers.

Go ahead and clog those arteries.

"Cheap" food today = expensive medical bills tomorrow.

Chronicles Of Depression 2.0: #112

Ambrose Evans-Pritchard brings up some new factors in the global oil market.

Asian countries begin to burst the oil bubble
One by one, countries across Asia and the Middle East are being forced to abandon price controls on fuel and energy, bringing hundreds of millions of consumers face to face with the true market cost of oil. The effect has already begun to chip away at world demand and may ultimately trigger a slide in crude prices.

Egypt - the most populous Arab state - has raised petrol prices by 40pc, despite protests in Cairo. Sri Lanka lifted diesel and petrol prices by 25pc over the weekend. India may have to follow soon to prevent its trade and budget deficits climbing to dangerous levels. "The situation is alarming. We need to stem the rot," said India's energy secretary, MS Srinivasan.

Indonesia has raised petrol prices by 33pc in order to restore fiscal discipline (subsidies are 3pc of GDP). Taiwan has mooted a 20pc rise, and Malaysia is to peel back controls. While China has so far resisted calls for price freedom, the policy is becoming unsustainable. Analysts predict a change in tack after the finish of the Beijing Olympics at the end of August.

The fast-changing politics of the emerging world has started to chill enthusiasm in New York and London for oil futures contracts. West Texas Intermediate has so far slipped $5 a barrel from its all-time high of $135 last week as hedge funds lock in profits, although analysts warn that it is too early to tell whether the 30pc spike in oil prices since March has burned itself out.

Oh boy.

There aren't any details on whether or not these price increases came over a period of time or at a heart-attack-inducing one-time shock.

This has been generating some unrest in countries whose governments suppressed the market price of oil to the end consumer.

So far, no riots along the lines that have been had for food.

This is interesting:
For now, traders are keeping a careful eye on politicians in Europe and the US as they call for curbs on the derivatives market for oil futures. The Hunt brothers in Texas were ruined attempting to corner the silver market in 1980 when the COMEX exchange suddenly changed margin requirements, and then suspended trading altogether. The pair failed to heed the warning signs.

While most people out there are deciding between McCain, Hillary, or Obama, the only way to really tell the markets the game has changed is to vote for Nader.

Let the speculators have the heart attacks instead of us.

Razorbook 400: US$299.00

Laptop magazine's blog is again first with a report (how do they do that?):

Mini-Review: 3K RazorBook 400 Mini-Notebook

and a follow-up:

3K RazorBook Now $299. Ready to Buy Now?

I really don't know what the hell to make of this thing!

It's $100 more than an Asus 2G Surf. From what I've read, the 2G Surf should simply be discontinued. I've not read anything good about it (if you have, leave a Comment with a link!).

It has a 2-cell(!!!) battery(!!!).

Laptop mag blog reports it can't do seemingly everyday functions like add or remove programs(!). Nor can it view Flash video (shades of Foleo!).

I throw up my hands. (Or should I leave off those last two words?)

Oh. The World Ended Today. Did You Notice?

I didn't either. But I thought that was just me.

Android: Show Me The CC&P!

First LIVE images of FULLSCREEN Android demo!

Ever since I learned that Google's Android OS is in the hands of former BeOS programmers (who were also former PalmSource people), I've stopped totally ignoring it.

That's not to say I've actually thought about the OS. But I have at least made it a point to check into AndroidGuys several times a week.

Now comes a whole bunch of big news at the above link, showing off a dramatic improvement of the Android UI (go see the videos!).

However ...

... what did you guys do that wasn't influenced by Apple?

All I'm seeing here is basically Hey We Can Do That Too! stuff.

You Be, Inc. people really did some pioneering unimitative work with the BeOS.

I'm not seeing the same thing here with Android.

Yeah, the Unlock dots are neat and new.

But whatcha got after that?

It's beginning to sink into my head now that Android might be a viable alternative to Apple's iPhone. It already kills Windows Mobile and PalmOS.

But show me:

* the Copy, Cut, and Paste!

* an Android phone paired with a Bluetooth keyboard (any BT keyboard)

* the text editing/word processing application

* the photo editing program (basically Photo Toolkit on a phone)

* the offline blogging client (see BlogDesk)

* the filesystem!

Show me that what you're doing is something that isn't reminiscent of Apple's pioneering work. Show me something that isn't giving me flashbacks to the failed Saguaro for PalmOS!

Who the hell wants an analog clock on a digital device?!!?

And that Pac-Man demo that was given? Please! Were you actually using physical buttons to play? How 1980s can you get? We're in the Age of the Accelerometer. Please join us here in the 21st century.

I will wait for the next iteration to be demoed.

Put me on your flack list so I won't miss it.

Sony, The New Titanic?

Sony CEO Howard Stringer: Look At Our Awesome, Expensive, Money-Losing TVs!

Dear God, will someone boot this eejit out of his position and install Ken Kutaragi?

This bit is a slap in the face to everyone at Sony:
But it's tricky to find entrepreneuers in company, especially in Japan, who can create small-scale success with new products. There isn't that tradition in Japan. Trying to find way to mimick it, so we can have some excitement. Making Sony a home for entrepreneuers is the next big challenge.

Sony's reputation -- in Japan itself! -- is that of a maverick.

That reputation is what caused it to lose the Betamax battle. That reputation also led to the downfall of digital cassette and Sony having to bribe its way to victory in the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray battle (a battle in which Sony had inferior technology and which they should have gladly lost!).

Why is it Sony can create technologies such as the Memory Stick and the UMD -- and they're the only damned company offering those formats?

Because they're deemed an outsider company in their own country!

Yet Howard Stringer thinks he's leading a pack of shy toadies?!

What I think is going on is this: They hate this overfed, pompous, strutting bastard.

They're sitting on all the good stuff.

They want his ass out of there.

They will bring Sony down to the point where there is no other choice but to get rid of Stringer to save Sony itself.

The sooner the better!

That amazon stole the ebook publicity from Sony says more than any possible analysis ever could. At some point that event will be studied by business majors and business historians.

And damn, if there's anyone on the Sony Board of Directors who understands that, start the maneuvers to dump Stringer today, now, this minute!

Hello, Sony Board: Do you really think horrifically overpriced TVs will save your company in the midst of an ongoing and prolonged global recession?

MSI Wind: Skins Available?

Over at the MSI website, they link to SkinIt:

Click = big

Which has a skin creation tool that allows anyone to design a custom skin for an MSI notebook.

I wonder if this will also be available for the MSI Wind?

Several different lid designs have already been shown by MSI. Could they be skins?

Fooling around, here's a quickie skin I designed:

Click = big

They actually have Batman available as a skin too!

Click= big

Yeah, just the kind of thing to chase away the women, right?

But hell, at least I wouldn't be bothered when I'm working!

MSI Makes Me Gnash My Teeth!

If this Engadget China post is to be believed, MSI will be selling the MSI Wind primarily through its website!

As for retail store distribution in the U.S., here is the list that currently stock MSI.

No J&R listed! No Best Buy or Circuit City!

Ordinarily, I wouldn't post something like this but stay with it. The ending is great!

Update: Something went awry with my links to Mobile01's photos. I suspect they might have prevented direct linking. So, I'm cloning their two photos. This is not something I like to do.

At this Mobile01 thread. Look for these links:

Update: Engadget China has even more photos!

Keyboards: MSI Wind Vs. Asus EeePC

JK on the Run posted Asus to debut 10-inch EEE PC next week- is this too big?

In the Comments there was this troubling assertion:
I wouldn't count on the Wind's keyboard being any better than the Eee. While the machine itself is larger, the keyboard is, roughly, the same size as the Eee Pc's.

OK, that made me pause.

I couldn't stand that thought and I just had to find out for myself.

The only picture I had on hand (note: on hand; maybe there's a better one I've missed!) for immediate comparison is this one from PC Home:

I stripped out the two keyboards:

Then did the best straightening job I could (I didn't bother with skew as that would have made the images even worse):

And here's the verdict:

It looks a hell of a lot bigger to me!

Further, I direct people to my earlier post: Update 3: Subnotebook Dimensions which shows the hp Mini Note above the MSI Wind.
