R.I.P.: Eric "Digger" Dowling

War veteran who helped inspire The Great Escape film dies

How many of us could be this great:
While imprisoned he became fluent in five languages, captained a prisoner's cricket team and went on to play an integral part in preparations for the now-famous Great Escape.

Here was a man under the captivity of the worst adversaries the world had ever seen -- yet he improved himself!

How many inmates are currently in prison here, where the worst they face from their captors is loss of privileges or solitary confinement? And yet what do they do? Mostly drugs.

More evidence of our degeneration.
